Anthonie Pieter Schotel (1890-1958), a painter originally from Dordrecht, limited himself to almost one motif: water. From his successive places of residence (Dordrecht, Volendam, Vlissingen, Rotterdam and Laren), he studied the water and ships. He was devoted to the sturdy botters on the Zuiderzee, which he saw entering and leaving the Volendam harbour under an ever-changing sky. .
Schotel had no complaints about success during his lifetime. Critics praised him as "the Mesdag of the Zuiderzee" and "Aquarius" of the Gooi painters. The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen owns a fine collection of his work. This collection of Saucers now forms a historical document of the Zuiderzee. Source: Carole.Denninger,The world of water.
