Johan Mari Henri ten Kate (The Hague, March 4, 1831 - Driebergen, March 26, 1910) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist. He worked in the style of Dutch Romanticism.
Mari Ten Kate also studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague and at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He worked in Oosterbeek, Elst and Marken and made study trips to Paris, Italy, England and in 1883-1884 to Java, where he made a lot of graphic work.
Ten Kate painted in the Romantic style and worked in both oil and watercolor. He mainly makes genre works and figure paintings with children, whom he strongly idealized, virtuous and in a natural simplicity that was very different from the former reality. Many of his works have a strong narrative character, of which this work is also a perfect example.
