Description
The Kishi School (岸派) was a Japanese painting tradition that emerged during the late Edo period. It was founded by Kishi Ganku (岸駒, 1749–1839), a renowned artist celebrated for his powerful and detailed depictions, particularly of tigers. The Kishi School blended elements of the Kanō School and the Maruyama-Shijō School, while also incorporating influences from Chinese painting.

The Kishi School is known for its emphasis on realism and dynamic compositions, often focusing on animals, birds, and natural scenes. Its works were characterized by bold brushstrokes and striking lines, which gave the paintings a unique vitality. Alongside Ganku, his sons and disciples, such as Kishi Gantai and Kishi Renzan, were significant contributors to the school. The influence of the Kishi School persisted in Japanese art through the early Meiji period.
