Lizzy Ansingh belonged to the group of Amsterdam painters sometimes referred to as the 'Amsterdam Joffers'. She received her first painting lessons from her aunt, Thérèse Schwartze. She painted broad and colorful portraits, still lifes and children's dolls in dim light, the fairytale aspect of which attracted her.
