Description
Hirai Baisen (平井梅仙, 1889–1969) was a prominent Japanese lacquer artist during the late Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa periods. He is known for his exceptional skill in maki-e (decorative lacquer work using gold and silver powder), as well as for blending traditional Japanese techniques with innovative approaches.

Baisen is especially celebrated for his high-relief maki-e and his ability to create intricate, detailed designs that often featured natural motifs such as flowers, birds, and landscapes. His work helped to revive and modernize the urushi (lacquer) tradition during a time of significant cultural and artistic change in Japan. His legacy as a master of lacquer art is still highly regarded in Japan and internationally.
