Description

Jan Toorop (1858-1928) was a Dutch artist, born in Java, who became known for his Symbolist and Art Nouveau works. After studying in Amsterdam and Brussels, he developed a versatile style, ranging from Impressionism to Pointillism, and eventually Symbolism. His masterpieces, such as The Three Brides (1893) and the Delftsche Slaolie poster (1894), combine decorative lines with mystical and religious themes. Following his conversion to Catholicism in 1905, he focused primarily on religious art. Toorop had a significant influence on Dutch art, and his works are displayed in leading museums.

Jan Toorop excelled in studies and drawings, which often formed the foundation for his paintings and graphic works. His drawings demonstrate his masterful control of line, detailing, and composition. He frequently used pencil, charcoal, or pen to capture subjects such as human figures, portraits, and symbolic scenes. These studies, including this work, offer insight into his creative process.

What makes this work particularly special is that in the drawing, he notes color indications that he likely intended to apply in a later work. The piece is signed in the lower left corner, with "weleerwaarde v.d. Born" above the signature. This refers to a chaplain for whom Toorop regularly painted. The study depicts a woman and child in the forest. These figures make the work even more unique, as it is not just a forest scene. The drawing is done in watercolor and colored pencil, fitting well into Toorop's luminist period. Luminism is primarily concerned with light effects and has similarities to Neo-Impressionism and Pointillism. As light played a central role, many artists were drawn to the Zeeland region of Walcheren, where the light was brighter. Jan Toorop was among these artists.
