The impressionist Herman Paradies painted topographical cityscapes of Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the first decades of the twentieth century. His impressions of pre-war Rotterdam, in particular, document the many harbours, canals, canals and bridges that the city was rich in. After moving to Schiedam in 1940, the painter mainly chose old parts of this city as the subject for his paintings. In 1992 the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam organized an exhibition of his work.
